About the blood culture test
A blood culture grows the organism causing an infection and then tests which antibiotics kill it — moving treatment from educated guesswork to a specific answer. It is the definitive test for typhoid in the first week of fever, for suspected bloodstream infection, and for fever that has not responded to a first course of antibiotics. Two things determine whether the result is trustworthy: aseptic collection technique, because skin contamination produces a false positive that leads to unnecessary treatment, and drawing before antibiotics are started, since a dose given beforehand can suppress growth. Both are things a trained nurse gets right and a hurried collection does not.
What the Blood Culture test measures
Who usually needs a Blood Culture test
- Fever in the first week where typhoid is suspected
- Fever that has not responded to a course of antibiotics
- Suspected bloodstream infection or sepsis
- Post-operative patients with unexplained persistent fever
- Patients with an indwelling catheter or central line and fever
- Immunocompromised patients with fever
Preparation: no fasting needed
No fasting. Timing matters more than fasting — collect during a fever spike where possible, and ideally BEFORE the first dose of antibiotics.

Blood Culture normal range — indicative values
What a typical adult reference range looks like for this test.
| Parameter | Indicative adult range |
|---|---|
| Culture result | No growth after 48–72 hours / Organism isolated and named |
| Sensitivity panel | Antibiotics reported as Sensitive, Intermediate or Resistant |
Indicative adult reference ranges only. Every laboratory publishes its own reference interval, and values shift with age, sex, pregnancy and medication. These figures are for orientation — never for self-diagnosis. Your report must be interpreted by your treating doctor.
