About the crp test

C-reactive protein is made by the liver within hours of inflammation starting, which makes it a much faster indicator than ESR. Doctors use it to judge whether an infection is bacterial and significant, to track whether treatment is working over days, and after surgery to watch for wound infection — a use case that matters directly to our post-operative nursing patients. What is the difference between CRP and hs-CRP?

They measure the same protein at different sensitivities for different purposes. Standard CRP is used to detect and follow infection and inflammation, where levels are relatively high. High-sensitivity CRP detects the much smaller variations that matter for cardiovascular risk assessment, and is ordered alongside a lipid profile rather than during an illness — an active infection makes the cardiac interpretation meaningless. Order whichever your doctor has written.

Does a high CRP mean I need antibiotics?

No, and this is an important distinction. CRP indicates that inflammation is present and roughly how intense it is — it does not identify a cause and it is not a prescription. It rises in bacterial infection, but also in viral illness, autoimmune disease, injury and after surgery. Antibiotics are a clinical decision made by your doctor using the whole picture, never by a single number.

Why is CRP checked after surgery?

Because it rises early when a wound infection is developing, often before the wound looks obviously infected. In our post-operative nursing cases the surgeon frequently asks for serial CRP over several days — a falling trend is reassuring, a rising one prompts a closer look.
