About the crp test
C-reactive protein is made by the liver within hours of inflammation starting, which makes it a much faster indicator than ESR. Doctors use it to judge whether an infection is bacterial and significant, to track whether treatment is working over days, and after surgery to watch for wound infection — a use case that matters directly to our post-operative nursing patients. A more sensitive version, hs-CRP, is used differently: as a cardiovascular risk marker in people being assessed for heart disease alongside a lipid profile.
What the CRP test measures
Who usually needs a CRP test
- Fever where the doctor needs to judge bacterial vs viral
- Post-operative patients — early wound infection detection
- Known inflammatory or autoimmune disease follow-up
- Monitoring whether antibiotics are working
- Cardiac risk assessment (hs-CRP) with a lipid profile
- Unexplained pain, swelling or persistent illness
Preparation: no fasting needed
No fasting needed. The sample can be collected at any time of day.

CRP normal range — indicative values
What a typical adult reference range looks like for this test.
| Parameter | Indicative adult range |
|---|---|
| CRP (normal) | Below 6 mg/L |
| hs-CRP — low cardiac risk | Below 1.0 mg/L |
| hs-CRP — average risk | 1.0 – 3.0 mg/L |
| hs-CRP — higher risk | Above 3.0 mg/L |
Indicative adult reference ranges only. Every laboratory publishes its own reference interval, and values shift with age, sex, pregnancy and medication. These figures are for orientation — never for self-diagnosis. Your report must be interpreted by your treating doctor.
