Should vegetarians test vitamin B12 regularly?

It is a reasonable idea, yes. B12 occurs naturally almost only in animal foods — meat, fish, eggs and dairy — so lifelong vegetarians run lower stores and strict vegans will become deficient without supplementation or fortified foods. Dairy provides some, which is why Indian lacto-vegetarians usually fare better than vegans, but a periodic check is sensible, particularly if there is any tingling, fatigue or memory symptom.

Can B12 deficiency cause permanent nerve damage?
