About the blood sugar test

Blood sugar testing comes in three forms and they answer different questions. Fasting blood sugar, taken after 8–12 hours without food, shows your baseline. Post-prandial sugar, taken exactly two hours after a meal, shows how well your body clears a glucose load — often the first thing to go wrong in early diabetes, sometimes years before fasting values rise. Random blood sugar is taken any time and is used when symptoms are urgent. Home collection matters most here: an elderly or diabetic patient who has fasted overnight should not then be driven to a lab and made to wait, because a long delay risks hypoglycaemia. We collect the fasting sample at home early, and return for the post-meal sample two hours after the patient eats.

What the Blood Sugar test measures

Fasting blood glucose (FBS) — baseline level
Post-prandial glucose (PPBS) — 2 hours after a meal
Random blood glucose (RBS) — any time of day
Early detection of pre-diabetes and insulin resistance

Who usually needs a Blood Sugar test

  • Excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss
  • Known diabetics monitoring dose adjustments
  • Family history of diabetes — annual screening after 30
  • Gestational diabetes screening during pregnancy
  • Slow-healing wounds, recurrent infections, or numbness in feet
  • Pre-operative assessment before any surgery
  • Anyone with a raised HbA1c needing confirmation

Preparation: fasting required

FBS requires 8–12 hours of fasting — water is allowed, tea and coffee are not. PPBS is drawn exactly 2 hours after the first bite of a meal. RBS needs no fasting. We book early-morning slots for fasting samples.

How we collect your Blood Sugar sample at home

Your sample is drawn by a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist — not a courier — which is why we can safely handle elderly, bedridden, difficult-vein, paediatric and post-surgical patients that most collection services struggle with.

  1. 1

    Call or WhatsApp us

Tell us the test name, or just describe the symptom or send a photo of the doctor's prescription. We confirm the test, the fasting requirement and the price on the same call.

  2. 2

Nurse reaches you in 60–90 minutes

a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist arrives at your home with sterile, single-use vacutainers, a fresh needle opened in front of you, and proper cold-chain transport boxes.

  3. 3

Sample goes straight to the lab

Every sample we collect is transported under correct temperature and handling conditions and processed at our NABL-accredited partner laboratory in Bangalore.

  4. 4

    Report on WhatsApp and email

Most routine tests are reported in 8–10 hours. Specialised tests and cultures take longer — we tell you the exact turnaround before we collect, never after.

Frequently asked about the blood sugar test

How many hours of fasting are needed for a sugar test?

Eight to twelve hours for a fasting blood sugar. Plain water is allowed and should be encouraged — dehydration makes the draw harder. Tea, coffee, milk, juice, chewing gum and cigarettes all break the fast. Take your regular tablets only if your doctor has told you to; many physicians ask diabetics to hold the morning dose until after the sample. We book fasting collections early in the morning so nobody has to fast into the afternoon.

Can you collect both fasting and post-meal samples at home?

Yes, and it's one of the strongest reasons to use a home service. Our nurse collects the fasting sample first thing in the morning, you then eat your normal breakfast, and the nurse returns exactly two hours after your first bite for the post-prandial sample. Doing this at a lab means two trips or a long, uncomfortable wait — for an elderly diabetic it is genuinely difficult.

Is a finger-prick glucometer reading as good as a lab test?

No. A glucometer is excellent for day-to-day self-monitoring, but it uses capillary blood and carries a meaningfully wider margin of error. Diagnosis and medication changes should be based on a venous lab sample, which is what we collect. Many patients use both — a glucometer daily, and a lab test periodically to verify the meter is still reading true.
