About the hba1c test

HbA1c tells you what your blood sugar has actually been doing for the past two to three months, not just at the moment of the prick. Because glucose sticks permanently to haemoglobin, the percentage that is glycated gives an honest long-term average that cannot be improved by eating carefully for two days before the test. That is why endocrinologists rely on it more than a single fasting reading, and why it is repeated every three to six months for every diagnosed diabetic. It requires no fasting at all, which makes it the easiest diabetes test to do at home.

What the HbA1c test measures

Glycated haemoglobin percentage (HbA1c %)
Estimated average glucose (eAG) over 2–3 months
Whether diabetes control is on target between doctor visits
Pre-diabetes detection before symptoms begin

Who usually needs a HbA1c test

  • Every diagnosed diabetic — repeat every 3 to 6 months
  • Suspected diabetes: excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss
  • Family history of diabetes — screening from age 30 onwards
  • Overweight adults with high BMI or metabolic syndrome
  • Anyone with a borderline fasting sugar result
  • Before starting or changing diabetic medication
  • PCOS patients screening for insulin resistance

Preparation: no fasting needed

No fasting needed — this is the main practical advantage of HbA1c over a fasting sugar test. Collect at any time of day, after any meal.

How we collect your HbA1c sample at home

Your sample is drawn by a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist — not a courier — which is why we can safely handle elderly, bedridden, difficult-vein, paediatric and post-surgical patients that most collection services struggle with.

  1. 1

    Call or WhatsApp us

Tell us the test name, or just describe the symptom or send a photo of the doctor's prescription. We confirm the test, the fasting requirement and the price on the same call.

  2. 2

Nurse reaches you in 60–90 minutes

a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist arrives at your home with sterile, single-use vacutainers, a fresh needle opened in front of you, and proper cold-chain transport boxes.

  3. 3

Sample goes straight to the lab

Every sample we collect is transported under correct temperature and handling conditions and processed at our NABL-accredited partner laboratory in Bangalore.

  4. 4

    Report on WhatsApp and email

Most routine tests are reported in 8–10 hours. Specialised tests and cultures take longer — we tell you the exact turnaround before we collect, never after.

Frequently asked about the hba1c test

Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?

No — and that is exactly why it's so convenient. HbA1c reflects a two-to-three-month average, so a recent meal makes no difference to the result. You can have the sample collected at any hour, after breakfast, after lunch, it does not matter. Fasting is only needed if your doctor has also ordered a fasting blood sugar or lipid profile on the same prescription.

How often should a diabetic repeat HbA1c?

Most physicians repeat it every three months while control is being established or medication is being adjusted, and every six months once the patient is stable and on target. Three months is the shortest genuinely useful interval — because the test measures a 2–3 month average, repeating it sooner than that mostly re-measures the same period and rarely changes management.

What is a good HbA1c level?

Below 5.7% is considered normal, 5.7–6.4% suggests pre-diabetes, and 6.5% or above is in the diabetic range. For someone already diagnosed and on treatment, most doctors aim below 7%, but the target is genuinely individual — it is often relaxed for elderly patients and those prone to hypoglycaemia. Your endocrinologist sets your target; this figure is orientation only.
