About the kidney function test

A kidney function test measures the waste products your kidneys are supposed to be clearing. Creatinine and urea rise when filtration falls, and the estimated GFR calculated from creatinine is the number nephrologists actually use to stage chronic kidney disease. Diabetes and high blood pressure together account for the large majority of kidney failure in India, and early kidney damage produces no symptoms at all — which is why every diabetic and every hypertensive should have this panel at least once a year, whether or not they feel unwell. For dialysis patients and elderly people with reduced mobility, home collection removes a genuinely difficult trip.

What the KFT test measures

Serum creatinine — the primary filtration marker
Blood urea and BUN
Estimated GFR (eGFR) — the CKD staging number
Uric acid
Sodium, potassium and chloride
Calcium and phosphorus
Total protein and albumin

Who usually needs a KFT test

  • Every diabetic — at least once a year
  • Every hypertensive patient on long-term medication
  • Swelling of feet, ankles or around the eyes
  • Reduced urine output, or frothy urine
  • Known chronic kidney disease — periodic staging
  • Dialysis patients between sessions
  • Before starting medication that needs renal dose adjustment
  • Long-term painkiller (NSAID) users

Preparation: no fasting needed

Fasting is not mandatory, but an 8-hour fasting sample is often preferred when the KFT is part of a wider health check. Stay normally hydrated — dehydration itself raises urea and creatinine.

How we collect your KFT sample at home

Your sample is drawn by a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist — not a courier — which is why we can safely handle elderly, bedridden, difficult-vein, paediatric and post-surgical patients that most collection services struggle with.

  1. 1

    Call or WhatsApp us

Tell us the test name, or just describe the symptom or send a photo of the doctor's prescription. We confirm the test, the fasting requirement and the price on the same call.

  2. 2

Nurse reaches you in 60–90 minutes

a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist arrives at your home with sterile, single-use vacutainers, a fresh needle opened in front of you, and proper cold-chain transport boxes.

  3. 3

Sample goes straight to the lab

Every sample we collect is transported under correct temperature and handling conditions and processed at our NABL-accredited partner laboratory in Bangalore.

  4. 4

    Report on WhatsApp and email

Most routine tests are reported in 8–10 hours. Specialised tests and cultures take longer — we tell you the exact turnaround before we collect, never after.

Frequently asked about the kidney function test

Is fasting needed for a kidney function test?

Not mandatory. Many doctors prefer a fasting sample when the KFT is part of a broader check-up, but the kidney parameters themselves are not greatly affected by a meal. What does matter is hydration — being dehydrated raises urea and creatinine on its own and can make kidney function look worse than it is. Drink water normally before the collection unless your doctor has restricted fluids.

How often should a diabetic get a kidney function test?

At least once a year, and more often if creatinine is already drifting up, if there is protein in the urine, or if blood pressure is poorly controlled. Diabetic kidney disease develops silently over years — by the time swelling or reduced urine appears, a lot of function is already lost. Annual KFT plus a urine protein check is the standard way to catch it while it is still modifiable.

Can you collect samples from a dialysis patient at home?

Yes. Dialysis patients are among our most frequent home-collection cases — travel is exhausting for them and infection risk is a real concern. Our nurses are experienced with AV fistula patients and know never to draw from the fistula arm. We coordinate the timing with your nephrologist's instructions, since pre- and post-dialysis values mean different things.
