About the urine routine test
Urine routine and microscopy is the first-line test for burning urination, frequency, lower abdominal pain and unexplained fever — the classic urinary tract infection picture, which is especially common in women, in diabetics, in elderly patients, and in anyone with an indwelling Foley catheter. It also picks up protein and sugar leaking into the urine, which are early warnings of kidney damage and diabetes. We supply a sterile container, explain the mid-stream clean-catch technique properly, and for catheterised patients our nurse collects directly from the catheter port using correct aseptic technique — a step most collection services get wrong.
What the Urine R/M test measures
Who usually needs a Urine R/M test
- Burning, painful or very frequent urination — suspected UTI
- Unexplained fever, especially in elderly patients
- Patients with an indwelling Foley catheter
- Diabetics — routine screening for protein and sugar in urine
- Known or suspected kidney disease follow-up
- Antenatal check-ups — routine at every trimester
- Lower abdominal or flank pain
Preparation: no fasting needed
No fasting. An early-morning first-pass sample is preferred because it is the most concentrated, but any sample is usable.
