About the urine routine test

Urine routine and microscopy is the first-line test for burning urination, frequency, lower abdominal pain and unexplained fever — the classic urinary tract infection picture, which is especially common in women, in diabetics, in elderly patients, and in anyone with an indwelling Foley catheter. It also picks up protein and sugar leaking into the urine, which are early warnings of kidney damage and diabetes. We supply a sterile container, explain the mid-stream clean-catch technique properly, and for catheterised patients our nurse collects directly from the catheter port using correct aseptic technique — a step most collection services get wrong.

What the Urine R/M test measures

Physical: colour, appearance, specific gravity
Chemical: protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, pH
Microscopy: pus cells, red cells, epithelial cells
Crystals, casts and bacteria
Yeast cells and other organisms

Who usually needs a Urine R/M test

  • Burning, painful or very frequent urination — suspected UTI
  • Unexplained fever, especially in elderly patients
  • Patients with an indwelling Foley catheter
  • Diabetics — routine screening for protein and sugar in urine
  • Known or suspected kidney disease follow-up
  • Antenatal check-ups — routine at every trimester
  • Lower abdominal or flank pain

Preparation: no fasting needed

No fasting. An early-morning first-pass sample is preferred because it is the most concentrated, but any sample is usable.

How we collect your Urine R/M sample at home

Your sample is drawn by a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist — not a courier — which is why we can safely handle elderly, bedridden, difficult-vein, paediatric and post-surgical patients that most collection services struggle with.

  1. 1

    Call or WhatsApp us

Tell us the test name, or just describe the symptom or send a photo of the doctor's prescription. We confirm the test, the fasting requirement and the price on the same call.

  2. 2

Nurse reaches you in 60–90 minutes

a registered nurse or trained phlebotomist arrives at your home with sterile, single-use vacutainers, a fresh needle opened in front of you, and proper cold-chain transport boxes.

  3. 3

Sample goes straight to the lab

Every sample we collect is transported under correct temperature and handling conditions and processed at our NABL-accredited partner laboratory in Bangalore.

  4. 4

    Report on WhatsApp and email

Most routine tests are reported in 8–10 hours. Specialised tests and cultures take longer — we tell you the exact turnaround before we collect, never after.

Frequently asked about the urine routine test

How do I collect a urine sample correctly at home?

We bring a sterile container. Clean the genital area first, begin passing urine into the toilet, then collect the middle part of the stream in the container without touching the inside rim, and close the lid immediately. This mid-stream clean-catch technique matters — a contaminated sample shows false pus cells and epithelial cells, and the test has to be repeated. Our nurse explains the whole process before leaving you to collect it, and for bedridden or catheterised patients the nurse collects it directly.

Can you collect a urine sample from a catheterised patient?

Yes. For patients with an indwelling Foley catheter, the sample must be drawn aseptically from the catheter sampling port — never from the drainage bag, which is always colonised and gives a meaningless result. Our nurses do this correctly as a routine part of catheter care, and can also change the catheter on the same visit if your doctor has ordered it.

What is the difference between urine routine and urine culture?

Urine routine and microscopy shows whether infection is likely — raised pus cells, bacteria, protein. Urine culture goes further: it grows the organism over 48–72 hours and tells your doctor exactly which antibiotic will kill it. Doctors typically start with routine, and add culture if the infection is recurrent, severe, or has not responded to the first antibiotic. We collect both from the same visit.
