About the psa test
PSA is a protein produced by the prostate, and its level rises with prostate enlargement, prostate inflammation and prostate cancer alike — which is why it is a screening prompt rather than a diagnosis. It is commonly ordered for men over 50 who have urinary symptoms: a weak stream, difficulty starting, getting up repeatedly at night, or a sense of incomplete emptying. It is also used to follow men already under urology care. A practical point that catches many patients out: cycling, a recent catheter, a urinary infection, ejaculation and a prostate examination can all raise PSA temporarily, so timing the test properly matters.
What the PSA test measures
Who usually needs a PSA test
- Men over 50 — screening as advised by their doctor
- Weak urinary stream or difficulty starting urination
- Waking repeatedly at night to pass urine
- Known benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) follow-up
- Family history of prostate cancer — often screened earlier
- Men under urology follow-up after prostate treatment
Preparation: no fasting needed
No fasting needed. Avoid cycling, ejaculation and vigorous exercise for 48 hours before, and postpone the test if there is an active urinary infection or a catheter was recently placed — all of these temporarily raise PSA.

PSA normal range — indicative values
What a typical adult reference range looks like for this test.
| Parameter | Indicative adult range |
|---|---|
| Total PSA (commonly used cut-off) | Below 4.0 ng/mL |
| Free / total PSA ratio | Interpreted by your urologist alongside total PSA |
| Age-specific ranges | Reference values rise with age — your doctor applies the right one |
Indicative adult reference ranges only. Every laboratory publishes its own reference interval, and values shift with age, sex, pregnancy and medication. These figures are for orientation — never for self-diagnosis. Your report must be interpreted by your treating doctor.
