About the malaria test

Malaria classically presents as fever with shaking chills and rigors, often in a pattern, with sweating, headache and body ache between episodes. Two testing approaches are used together: a peripheral blood smear, where the parasite is looked for directly under the microscope and the species identified, and a rapid antigen card test that gives a faster answer. Timing helps — a sample taken during or shortly after a fever spike has the best chance of showing the parasite. Because malaria is treatable and delay genuinely matters, home collection during an episode is worth doing rather than waiting for the patient to feel well enough to travel.

Frequently asked about the malaria test

When is the best time to collect a malaria sample?

During or shortly after a fever spike gives the best yield, because that is when parasite levels in circulating blood tend to be highest. If the first smear is negative but the clinical suspicion remains, doctors often repeat it during the next episode. Tell us when the fever peaks and we'll time the visit around it.

Is the rapid card test enough, or is a smear also needed?

Doctors usually want both. The rapid antigen test gives a quick answer, but the microscope smear identifies the species — which matters, because P. falciparum and P. vivax are treated differently and carry different risks — and can indicate parasite load. We collect a single sample that covers both.

Can you collect the sample while the patient has chills?

Yes. Our nurse can attend during an episode, draw the sample, and record temperature, pulse and blood pressure at the same time — useful information for the treating doctor. If the patient looks unwell beyond the fever itself, the nurse will say so and we can arrange further nursing support or hospital coordination.
