About the allergy test

Allergy blood testing measures IgE, the antibody involved in allergic reactions. A total IgE level tells you whether an allergic tendency is present at all; specific IgE panels test reactions against defined allergen groups — dust mites, pollens, moulds, pet dander, and common food allergens. Blood testing is particularly useful when skin-prick testing is impractical: for young children, for people with widespread eczema, and for anyone on antihistamines they cannot easily stop, since those medicines interfere with skin tests but not with blood tests. Bangalore's dust and seasonal pollen make inhalant allergies a persistent complaint here.

What the Allergy Panel test measures

Total serum IgE
Specific IgE against inhalant allergens — dust, pollen, mould, pet dander
Specific IgE against food allergens
Absolute eosinophil count (AEC)

Who usually needs a Allergy Panel test

  • Recurrent sneezing, blocked nose and watery eyes
  • Asthma or recurrent wheezing
  • Chronic urticaria — recurring hives
  • Eczema and atopic dermatitis, in children and adults
  • Suspected food allergy after specific reactions
  • Chronic cough that has not responded to treatment
  • Children with recurrent respiratory symptoms

Preparation: no fasting needed

No fasting needed. Unlike skin-prick testing, antihistamines do NOT interfere with blood IgE testing — you can continue your usual medication. Confirm with your doctor before changing anything.

Frequently asked about the allergy test

Do I need to stop antihistamines before an allergy blood test?

No — and this is a real advantage of blood testing over skin-prick testing. Antihistamines suppress the skin response and must be stopped for several days before a skin test, which is miserable for someone with active symptoms. Blood IgE testing is unaffected, so you can continue your medication. Never stop a prescribed medicine without asking your doctor.

Why does an allergy panel take longer than 8–10 hours?

Because specific IgE panels are specialised assays run in batches rather than routine same-day biochemistry, so 24–48 hours is realistic. A total IgE and eosinophil count come back faster. We tell you the actual expected turnaround for the exact panel your doctor ordered before we collect, rather than promising a routine timeline that would not hold.

Can allergy testing be done for young children at home?

Yes, and home collection is often much kinder for a child — familiar surroundings, a parent holding them, no waiting room. Our nurses draw paediatric samples using appropriate small-gauge needles and the smallest sufficient volume. Blood testing is also frequently preferred over skin-prick testing in young children and in kids with widespread eczema.
